Not only residents of the towns in the Região Serrana (mountain region) of Rio de Janeiro state have been suffering with the tragedy provoked by last Tuesday's rains. Pets are also going through a sticky patch in the attempt to stay close to their owners.
That was the case of Falcon. The mixed-breed dog of housekeeper Miriam Barbosa - one of the 50 people who walked for more than six hours between the neighbourhoods of Santa Rita and Vila Paraiso, in Teresopolis - surprised everybody when he got lost on trail, but reappeared less than 24 hours later, safe and sound, in the house of the housekeeper's eldest sister.
"I couldn't take care of him while walking on the trail. Appart from the children, there was also tiredeness, rain and mud. When I realized, he wasn't with us anymore. But in the following day, there was he in my sister's house, Simone, who has given us shelter until we can go back home", said Miriam, unable to explain how the dog could find her.
"It was amazing. How could he guess that we were here? I didn't have any hope of finding him - alive and yet in such a short time. Not only me, but everyone in the house is very happy".
