Sirlene do Carmo said she had to run away with her children in her arms, in Areal, Rio de Janeiro state.
The 31-year-old housekeeper, Sirlene do Carmo Herculano, lost the house where she used to live at Amazonas street, in Areal, in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro state, during last Wednesday's floods. She managed to escape with her four children in her arms, one of them, a 9-month-old baby.
"Everything was quick. When we realized, the water was very high. I only had time to pick up my children in my arms and ran away from all that water, said Sirlene.
As she spoke, she was divided between taking care of the classroom, which is now her home, and breastfeeding her baby.
"Luckily, he's still breast-feeding, and this I can give him. The baby clothing I had bought was carried away in the water. The clothing he's wearing now has all been donated.
