Couple has found their female dog four days after the floods in a dog shelter, this Sunday.

The animals have been vaccinated, wormed and fed.

Many dogs were abandoned by owners that lived in the towns hit by floods and mudslides since Tuesday, when torrential rains poured across the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro state. Panic and despair by residents in order to save themselves from the floods made them leave their pets behind.

In Teresopolis, about 150 injured dogs have been found, buried or trapped in the houses hit by the floods.

Such was the case of Daniel Mendonça and Maria Ferreira Yoros, who live at Caleme neigbourhood, one of the areas hit by the floods, in Teresopolis. "We ran away from home under the risk of collapsing and left her there, as we couldn't take her with us."

Mendonça said that, after having access to his house released by the Civil Defense, he came back to see Dara, his female-dog. "Surprisingly, she wasn't there anymore. We didn't know if she ran away or if was taken away by somebody."

Luckily, Dara was taken by volunteers to a NGO's animal shelter, located at Meudon neigbourhood. "We came just to check, and she [Dara] was there. As she saw us she started to whin. We dindn't even need any papers to prove we are her onwer, as it was Dara that recognized us in the shelter", said Maria.

After four days in the dog shelter, Dara was given a new dog collar, new food bowl and water fountain and a bag of dog food.

Adoption

According to biologist Guilherme Andreoli, from Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos, in Teresopolis, most dogs taken to the shelter are adopted. "We have already formalized 20 adoptions, but more dogs need to be adopted. There was only one case of an abandoned beagle which was adopted, but then his owner came up and required his dog. Then the adoption formalization was cancelled and the dog was returned to his owner."

As soon as the animals arrive at the shelter, they go through a health check-up process by a veterinarian. We have volunteers in the veterinary field, including students and professors, who look for for possible fractures, injuries, lesions and check the dog's general health condition. They are vaccinated and wormed. Then if necessary, the dog is radiographed and medicated until fully recovered", said Andreoli, who is helping the NGO Estimação.

Anti-stress walk

Among the tasks done by volunteers who take care of abandoned dogs is the anti-stress therapy. "It's normal, mainly for what they have gone through, that dogs get stressed, even now that they have to stay with other dogs that had never seen before. One way out of this, is to take each dog for a walk", said Andreoli.

66-year-old retired Clarice Trindade, came to Rio de Janeiro to acompany her daughter, who volunteered to take care of abandoned dogs and - incidentally - walked with several dogs throughout the neighbourhood. "I have already walked with six dogs. They become very relaxed. I am happy and the dogs unstressed."

As she walked with a female-dog, 60-year-old volunteer Terezinha Gaia, discovered the name of her new friend on a leash and her story as well. Bolinha, as she was called by employees of a construction items shop, used to sleep in this store. They told me she had disappeared during the rain period."

According to Terezinha, the female-dog had had puppies a few months ago and they were still nursing from her.

To Rogerio Franco, owner of Bom Retiro kennel, which also functions as a dog inn, it is important to take the dogs out of streets in order to prevent animal deseases. "The care for these animals prevent deseases and sanitation problems. I, for instance, couldn't accept the request of dog owners who lost their houses, to shelter their dogs in the kennel. I haven't got water and this is essencial to clean dogs' mess in the kennel, and also to keep hydration."

Shelters are asking for donations of wet dog food (canned), dry dog food, old towels, newspapers, cardboard, muzzles, leashes and wire-fence enclosures to separate the animals.
